How to play

There are four base game symbols: the female explorer, golden piranhas, pyramids, and hieroglyphic dragons. There are also the playing cards 10, J, Q, K and A. The Book is both the scatter and the wild.

Under the reels is the large, clear user panel. Autoplay is to the left, followed by help, gamble, lines and bet. To the right are the start button and your bet. To play, select your lines and bet by pressing the corresponding buttons. You need to continually press to go full circle, as there is no +/- functionality. This could become a little time-consuming. Autoplay is also available if desired, but this requires the player to select the function and end it manually when required rather than choosing a specified number of automatic spins.

Bet sizes & maximum win

10 adjustable paylines allow for greater customisation. With one payline, bets start at just 1.00. The max coin bet is 50.00, giving a 500 coin maximum wager that should suit the higher rollers.

Symbols pay for combinations of two or more apart from the playing cards and scatter, which pay for three or more. The Ms Jones explorer is the most valuable at up to 500,000 coins, followed by the pyramid for up to 200,000 and prizes of up to 75,000 for the dragons and piranhas. All payouts can be found in the paytable.

Bonus features

Free spins - three or more scatters will grant ten free bonus spins, which will be played on the same lines and with the same bet as the triggering game. At the start of the round, an expanding symbol will be randomly chosen to fill a reel. This could be anything except the book and will pay as per the paytable on all active paylines, irrespective of whether the symbols are consecutive; what’s more, the bonus spins can be retriggered during the round to keep the prizes coming for longer.

After any win, you will have the option to gamble to double or even quadruple your win. You need to guess what the facedown card will be and can choose either the colour to double your win or the suit to quadruple it. A gamble amount of five could therefore see you scoop 10 or 20 from the round if you guess correctly.

RTP & volatility

RTP is estimated at 96 per cent, which is fairly average for a themed slot. This is respectable enough and the medium volatility suggests some variation in payouts. Generally speaking, players could expect medium payouts relatively consistently to keep the gameplay engaging for longer.

Continue your adventures with the 5x3 Book of Dead demo slot, an Aztec-themed offering from Play’n GO. A 96.21 per cent RTP, 10 paylines, free spins, multipliers, expanding symbols and a top prize of up to 5,000x your wager make this golden quest potentially very rewarding, while an engaging storyline and top-notch graphics make it a pleasure to play.

Our verdict

We don’t think the user interface is as ergonomic as it could be, given the lack of +/- to adjust the wager, and customisation is reduced with the basic autoplay functionality; however, the gameplay is still straightforward. The bet increments should appeal to a range of casual and higher roller players, with the ability to adjust the number of active paylines offering greater betting flexibility.

The auditory aspect adds little to the Aztec vibe and makes this feel more akin to a classic slot given the more mechanical sound-effects. The graphics and animations, while colourful, are rather dated for a 2015 offering; however, the 96 per cent RTP is decent and the medium volatility should result in some reasonable payouts at a somewhat consistent rate to make up for any loss in aesthetic value.

We like the treasure trove of bonus elements to this slot to keep things interesting and rewarding. The ability to retrigger free spins and the inclusion of an expanding symbol provides more chances for players to win; meanwhile, the gamble aspect injects some tension for those who want a little risk in the hopes of doubling or quadrupling their prizes. The base game symbol values are not to be overlooked either, as five on a payline could rain down some very tempting wins.

All in all, this is a potentially rewarding slot with some engaging bonus elements to make up for what it lacks in visual appeal.
